Chapter

Designed around your home

Every custom build starts with a walk of your property. We photograph the entrance from the street, from the porch, and from inside the car at the driveway approach — the angle you'll actually see the gate from a hundred times a week. We listen for what the project really needs to do: privacy from a busy road, a statement piece for a heavily landscaped front yard, a quiet companion to a Spanish Revival or a Mid-Century original.

We translate all of that into elevation drawings and full 3D renderings you can hold up against your front elevation before we order a single board. Nothing goes into fabrication until you've signed off on the design.

Chapter

Built like furniture, sized for weather

Frames are joined with mortise and tenon — no exposed screws or face-mounted brackets holding the structure together. Stiles and rails are cut from quartersawn Sapele to fight cup and twist, and panels are book-matched where the grain calls for it.

The whole assembly is sized with seasonal movement in mind: a Bay Area gate goes through a 30°F swing and ~40% humidity change between July afternoons and February mornings, and we engineer the joinery so the gate still closes cleanly through every season. Every visible joint is dry-fit, marked, knocked apart, and reassembled with marine adhesive and stainless draw-bores.

Chapter

Hardware that earns its keep

We don't spec hardware to a price point — we spec it to last. Hinges are rated 1.

5–2x your gate's actual swinging weight, fasteners are stainless or hot-dipped galvanized so they survive the salt-fog drift inland from the Bay, and locking hardware is chosen to match the entry door of the home — Emtek, Baldwin, Sun Valley, Rocky Mountain, or hand-forged from our smith for one-of-one projects. Automation, when you want it, uses operators we install on our own families' properties: FAAC underground hydraulics for a clean look, BFT for value, LiftMaster CSL/CSW for sliding.

Chapter

Installed for the long game

Bay Area soils are not friendly to gateposts. We auger to a minimum of 36 inches — deeper on hillside lots in Lafayette, Orinda, and the Oakland Hills — set engineered steel posts (not buried 4x4s) in fiber-reinforced concrete, slope the top of every footing for drainage, and pour collars above grade so water can't pool against the post.

On automated installs we trench properly for low-voltage and operator cabling, vault the photo-eyes flush, and tune the operator's force, slowdown, and obstruction sensitivity to UL 325 before we leave site.

Materials

What we build with.

  • Sapele hardwood — quartersawn, 1,410 Janka, interlocked grain, naturally rot-resistant
  • Optional white oak, teak, or ipe for specific aesthetic or budget targets
  • Hot-rolled or powder-coated steel frames and accents
  • Hand-forged blackened iron — sourced from a local Bay Area smith
  • Brass and bronze for pulls, knockers, and decorative elements
  • Stainless and hot-dipped fasteners throughout — no plain-steel screws
  • Penofin Verde, Armstrong Clark, or Sikkens penetrating-oil finishes
  • Marine-grade exterior adhesives and stainless draw-bored pegs at every joint
Timeline

How long it takes.

Most custom gates ship in 6–10 weeks from approved design. Larger automated projects or complex metalwork can extend to 12 weeks. Install on-site typically takes 1–3 days, plus a return visit for the first finish refresh at the 12-month mark.

Pitfalls

Common mistakes.

  • Choosing softwood (cedar or redwood) for a fully exposed entry — it grays and cups within a few years.
  • Undersized hinges that sag the gate within a single season.
  • Posts set without proper depth or drainage for Bay Area expansive clay soils.
  • Finishing with a film-forming product (varnish, polyurethane) that peels instead of penetrating.
  • Skipping the 12-month finish refresh — wood loses 30% of its protection in the first year.
  • Specifying a residential-grade operator on a 16-foot driveway gate — it will burn out within 18 months.
Northern California

Built for Bay Area microclimates

Northern California is not one climate — it's a dozen. A gate facing Walnut Creek's hot summer afternoons (regularly 95°F+) needs different finish chemistry than one in Berkeley fog, and a salt-air gate in Tiburon or Mill Valley has to fight chloride corrosion that an inland gate in Danville never sees. We pick wood species, hardware finish, and finish system based on your specific site. For sun-loaded west-facing gates in Concord, Walnut Creek, Lafayette, and the Tri-Valley, we lean Sapele or ipe with a UV-loaded Penofin. For Marin and the Peninsula coast we move to 316-grade stainless hardware and add a sacrificial finish coat we expect to refresh annually. For shaded Berkeley and Oakland Hills installs we watch for moss and mildew loading and spec a finish with a fungicide pack.

Problem
A Walnut Creek homeowner wanted a single statement gate that tied a modern remodel to a heavily landscaped front yard without feeling cold or cliché.
Solution
We designed a horizontal Sapele slat gate inside a hand-forged blackened-steel frame with an oversized solid-brass pull. A matching 42-inch pedestrian gate carried the same proportions to the walkway, and the existing post lights were rewired to wash the gate face at night.
Materials

Timeline
9 weeks from design approval to install.
Result
A gate the owners describe as 'the best decision we made on the whole remodel.' Already photographed by their landscape designer and featured on a Bay Area home tour the following spring.

5-Star Reviews

Homeowners who chose Heartwood.

5.0 average · 16 verified reviews
  • "Heartwood designed and installed a Sapele swing gate that completely changed the front of our home. The crew was tidy, the joinery is gorgeous, and the FAAC operator has been flawless through two summers."
    M. & J. Caldwell · Northgate, Walnut Creek, CA
  • "Our driveway is steep and narrow. Jon's team came out three times to measure and rendered two options. The bi-parting Sapele gate they built clears the slope perfectly."
The Okonkwo family · Happy Valley, Lafayette, CA
  • "We compared three builders. Heartwood was the only one who showed up with a 3D rendering and a finish sample we could leave outside for a week. Three years in and the gate still looks new."
Dr. R. Patel · Orinda Downs, Orinda, CA
  • "We needed a gate that honored the 1924 architecture of the house. Heartwood matched the existing ironwork and built a Sapele pedestrian gate that looks like it has always been there."
The Whitfield estate · Upper Piedmont, Piedmont, CA
  • "Heartwood understood our 1912 brown shingle immediately. The redwood entry gate they built has the right proportions and the joinery is honest — no plugs hiding bolts."
    S. Lindqvist · North Berkeley, Berkeley, CA

Frequently Asked

Common questions.

Most full custom driveway gates land between $12,000 and $28,000 installed, with the range driven mostly by size, automation, and metalwork complexity. Pedestrian-only custom entries start around $6,000.
Thirty years is a reasonable expectation for the wood and joinery with annual finish maintenance. The hardware and operators are typically rated 15–20 years and are designed to be serviced rather than replaced.
