The first gate
A single hand-built Sapele mahogany entry gate for a Walnut Creek home. Mortise and tenon. Drawbore pins. No screws in the frame. The neighbors started calling.
The estate work
First fully automated driveway gate on a Lafayette estate, then Orinda, Piedmont, Ross, and Tiburon. Architects began specifying Heartwood Gates by name.

We build gates the way a master cabinetmaker builds a sideboard — mortise and tenon, drawbore pins, book-matched grain, hand-finished — then we engineer the structure for Bay Area wind, coastal salt air, inland sun, and clay-soil movement. The result is a custom gate that reads like millwork and performs like architecture.

We specify Sapele mahogany, FSC white oak, Burmese teak, and hand-forged iron — paired with hot-rolled or powder-coated steel, brass, and bronze. Every fastener is stainless or hot-dipped. Every joint is engineered for fifty-year service in Northern California's microclimates.
