Driveway Gates in Walnut Creek, CA — custom Sapele hardwood and steel driveway gates handcrafted by Heartwood Gates of Concord, CA
Driveway Gates · Walnut Creek, CA

Driveway gates engineered for Walnut Creek clay and the I-680 corridor.

Almost every driveway gate we build in Walnut Creek has to solve the same two problems before anything aesthetic gets decided: expansive clay that heaves eight to twelve inches of movement a year along the I-680 corridor, and afternoon sun that will destroy an under-specified finish in a single summer. That is why our Walnut Creek footings run deeper than code minimum and why we will not quote a gate here without walking the soil first.

Why Walnut Creek homeowners commission Heartwood.

Most Walnut Creek driveway gate projects start with a site survey: we measure the opening, check soil and slope, identify utility lines, and confirm clearances against fences, gateposts, and the road. From that survey we recommend a configuration — swing, sliding cantilever, V-track, bi-parting, or bi-fold — and then design the gate from scratch around your home's architecture.

Construction is hardwood, steel, or a hybrid. Sapele mahogany is our most-specified species for the Bay Area because its Janka hardness (1,510) and natural rot resistance hold up to NorCal sun and dew cycling. Steel frames are welded and powder-coated or hand-finished in blackened patina. Hardware is marine-grade bronze, stainless, or hand-forged depending on the design.

Footings in Walnut Creek are engineered for local soils — expansive clay across the I-680 corridor, decomposed granite in the foothills, and bay-mud edges in the East Bay flats all get different pier depths and reinforcement. We never reuse an existing post without verifying it.

Driveway gates can be manual or automated. For automation we install FAAC, LiftMaster, Viking, and Nice operators, with UL325-compliant safety systems (loop detectors, photo eyes, edge sensors), keypad or intercom entry, and smart-home integration where requested.

Local context · Walnut Creek

Walnut Creek homes range from mid-century hillside builds to traditional ranches and contemporary new construction. Hot, dry inland summers and clay-heavy soils common across the I-680 corridor — we spec UV-stable finishes and pier-and-footing systems sized for expansive soils.

Bi-parting Sapele drive gate on a 12% approach

16' bi-parting swing · FAAC underground operators · loop + photo eyes

The approach rose fast off the street, which killed a single-leaf swing. We split the opening into two 8' leaves, set the hinge posts on 42" piers to clear the clay, and buried the operators so nothing interrupts the sightline back to the house.

Matching pedestrian entry for a 1962 ranch remodel

Single pedestrian gate · horizontal slat · bronze hardware

The owners had already committed to the driveway gate; the walk gate had to read as the same composition at a quarter of the width. We tightened the slat reveal proportionally so the rhythm matched at both scales.

Root protection ruled out a conventional footing on the north post, so we sistered to the existing masonry pier and carried the load through a steel plate rather than trenching under the drip line.

What Walnut Creek actually asks for.

Horizontal slat with blackened steel — Northgate and Walnut Heights

The dominant Walnut Creek request of the last three years: wide horizontal Sapele slats, tight reveal, blackened hot-rolled steel frame. It flatters the long low rooflines of the 1960s ranch stock without pretending to be period-correct.

Board-and-batten farmhouse — Parkmead and Saranap

Modern-farmhouse remodels along Parkmead want vertical board-and-batten faces with an exposed strap hinge in oil-rubbed bronze. We build these in Sapele rather than cedar because the west-facing exposure here punishes softwood.

Solid privacy panels sized for wind — Tice Valley

Tice Valley clients almost always want full-privacy solid panels. Solid faces catch wind, so we either brace with a concealed steel armature or introduce a 15% vent gap at the top rail — invisible from the street, decisive for operator longevity.

"Heartwood designed and installed a Sapele swing gate that completely changed the front of our home. The crew was tidy, the joinery is gorgeous, and the FAAC operator has been flawless through two summers."

Frequently asked

Driveway Gates in Walnut Creekquestions we hear most.

Swing vs. sliding — which is better for a Walnut Creek driveway?+

Swing gates are ideal when you have driveway depth and a level approach. Sliding (cantilever or V-track) is the answer for narrow driveways, steep approaches, or sites where a swing arc would block a sidewalk. We recommend the configuration during the site visit.

Do you build driveway gates that match an existing fence?+

Yes. We can match an existing fence in species, slat profile, finish, and hardware — or build a complementary contrast piece if you want the gate to stand on its own.

How long is the install on a driveway gate in Walnut Creek?+

Two to four days on site for most builds: post setting and concrete cure, gate hanging and adjustment, operator install and automation wiring, then final finish touch-up.
