Driveway Gates in Bay Area, CA — custom Sapele hardwood and steel driveway gates handcrafted by Heartwood Gates of Concord, CA
Driveway Gates · Bay Area, CA

Driveway gates engineered for every Bay Area microclimate.

Driveway gate engineering across the Bay Area is really microclimate engineering. Salt air on the bay side dictates hardware metallurgy; expansive clay inland dictates pier depth; canyon shade dictates finish chemistry. We survey the specific site before quoting because a gate specified for Orinda will not last in Larkspur, and vice versa.

Why Bay Area homeowners commission Heartwood.

Most Bay Area driveway gate projects start with a site survey: we measure the opening, check soil and slope, identify utility lines, and confirm clearances against fences, gateposts, and the road. From that survey we recommend a configuration — swing, sliding cantilever, V-track, bi-parting, or bi-fold — and then design the gate from scratch around your home's architecture.

Construction is hardwood, steel, or a hybrid. Sapele mahogany is our most-specified species for the Bay Area because its Janka hardness (1,510) and natural rot resistance hold up to NorCal sun and dew cycling. Steel frames are welded and powder-coated or hand-finished in blackened patina. Hardware is marine-grade bronze, stainless, or hand-forged depending on the design.

Footings in Bay Area are engineered for local soils — expansive clay across the I-680 corridor, decomposed granite in the foothills, and bay-mud edges in the East Bay flats all get different pier depths and reinforcement. We never reuse an existing post without verifying it.

Driveway gates can be manual or automated. For automation we install FAAC, LiftMaster, Viking, and Nice operators, with UL325-compliant safety systems (loop detectors, photo eyes, edge sensors), keypad or intercom entry, and smart-home integration where requested.

Local context · Bay Area

From Berkeley brown shingle to Napa wine-country contemporary to Peninsula modern, we design gates that read with the architecture they belong to. Bay Area microclimates range from coastal fog and salt air to inland 100°F+ valleys — every gate design and finish system is specified for its specific site.

Projects · Bay Area

Three gates we built in Bay Area.

Sapele and iron double driveway gate with speakeasy detail, East Bay
East Bay, Bay Area

Estate entry with speakeasy detail

18' automatic double swing · Sapele and iron

A long approach drive that needed presence at distance. The speakeasy grille gives the owners a look at the street without opening the leaves.

Hand-carved mahogany entry gate for a Peninsula home
Peninsula, Bay Area

Carved entry gate for a Peninsula remodel

Entry gate · Sapele · hand-carved panel

One carved panel, drawn with the owners over three revisions, set into an otherwise disciplined frame. Restraint is what makes the carving work.

White oak dutch door gate for a North Bay cottage
North Bay, Bay Area

White oak dutch gate for a North Bay cottage

Dutch-style gate · white oak · bronze hardware

Split leaf so the top can stay open to the garden. White oak for the grain, bronze because the site sits close enough to the water to matter.

What Bay Area actually asks for.

Coastal and bay-side — Marin, Berkeley, Piedmont

Marine stainless and bronze hardware, mildew-resistant finishes, and Craftsman or brown-shingle language that suits fog-belt architecture.

Inland valleys — Walnut Creek, Danville, Livermore

High-UV finish packages, deeper clay-rated footings, and wind-considered faces on anything solid and wide.

Wine country and foothills — Napa, Sonoma, Placer

Estate-scale proportions for long approach drives, forged iron detail, and finishes chosen to weather evenly under sustained sun.

Frequently asked

Driveway Gates in Bay Areaquestions we hear most.

Swing vs. sliding — which is better for a Bay Area driveway?+

Swing gates are ideal when you have driveway depth and a level approach. Sliding (cantilever or V-track) is the answer for narrow driveways, steep approaches, or sites where a swing arc would block a sidewalk. We recommend the configuration during the site visit.

Do you build driveway gates that match an existing fence?+

Yes. We can match an existing fence in species, slat profile, finish, and hardware — or build a complementary contrast piece if you want the gate to stand on its own.

How long is the install on a driveway gate in Bay Area?+

Two to four days on site for most builds: post setting and concrete cure, gate hanging and adjustment, operator install and automation wiring, then final finish touch-up.
